In the Middle Ages, a seneschal was a high-ranking member of the staff of a nobleman's household and as such, duties could range from supervising feasts and domestic ceremonies to dispensing justice -- but primarily the job involved administering the household. The job of an SCA seneschal is not much different. Seneschals are responsible for the administrative tasks of the West Kingdom; keepers of the records; and write the reports which show the West Kingdom is healthy and flourishing. Seneschal's also update the laws and ensure that the West Kingdom is functioning. We make sure events and meetings are held, and also act as liaisons between the real world and the SCA.

Naturally, this can't done by a single individual! There is a seneschal for every branch in the West Kingdom, and a whole host of officers who have specific areas of responsibility. It is this group of officer's, working together, like the staff of a large household, which ensures the West Kingdom keeps running and the populace has a safe place to play.
